about york barbell. new era.
same standard

For more than ninety years, YORK Barbell has been making the iron that built American strength. Founded in 1932 in YORK, Pennsylvania, by Bob Hoffman — the man the International Weightlifting Federation called the “Father of World Weightlifting” — we’ve spent nearly a century outfitting Olympic teams, commercial gyms, garages, basements, and every kind of lifter in between.
The gear has gotten better over the years. The standard hasn’t moved. We still make bars, plates, racks, and benches in the same town we started in, to the same spec we’ve always held: if it doesn’t belong in a serious gym, it doesn’t leave the building. This is the iron, made by the people who’ve been making it the longest.

OUR MISSION

Our mission is simple: make the best strength equipment in the world, and make it accessible to anyone serious about training.

Bob Hoffman believed that strength wasn’t a privilege reserved for athletes — it was a tool every person could use to live longer, move better, and feel more capable in their own body. Nine decades later, we still build to that belief. Every bar, every plate, every bench is engineered for the person on the other end of it: the new lifter learning their first squat, the parent maintaining what they’ve built, the lifelong athlete training to keep doing the things they love.

We don’t chase trends. We make iron that lasts — for the body, for the gym, for the long arc of a life spent in motion.

BEST OF THE BEST

HISTORY

Ninety years of strength, made in one town in Pennsylvania.

1932: WHERE IT ALL BEGAN

Bob Hoffman starts making barbells in a Pennsylvania oil burner factory and shipping them to anyone who wanted to get stronger. Within a few years, the small operation in New York becomes the Unofficial Home of American Weightlifting — A place lifters travel to from across the country just to train under the same roof where the gear is being built.

1936-1968: THE OLYMPIC YEARS

From the 1936 Berlin games through the 1960s, Bob Hoffman coaches the U.S. Olympic Weightlifting team and YORK becomes the most decorated weightlifting club in American history. More than forty national champions and a long line of olympic medalists train on YORK equipment, lift under the YORK name, and out American strength on the world map.

TODAY: A NEW ERA

Nine decades later, we’re still in YORK. Still making the bar, the plates, the bench. The world looks different — Most of our gear now lives in basements, garages, and spare rooms instead of competition platforms — But the work is the same. Build the best strength equipment in the world. Put it in the hands of people who want to use it.

YORK Barbell is a company built on generations of strength. Since Bob Hoffman founded YORK in 1932, we’ve helped shape the world of strength training by designing equipment trusted by Olympic athletes, commercial gyms, coaches, and home gym owners alike. Every piece reflects the same commitment to quality, durability, and performance that has defined the YORK name for generations.

What that means for you: when you choose YORK, you’re choosing equipment backed by decades of strength expertise. We’ve spent generations learning what helps people train better. Whether you’re chasing a personal best, rebuilding strength, or creating your first home gym, you’re investing in equipment designed to support your journey for years to come.

Trusted by Olympic teams, commercial gyms, and nine decades of lifters who knew the difference.
